For example, you can say that you want a flower or a portrait tattoo, but the artist will have to design the tattoo in a unique way to cover the old. The color will need to have enough contrast to mask the old ink. Darker colors will need to be used over black or blue ink.
For example, a portrait tattoo or a design that is mostly light colors will not work as a coverup because the old tattoo will show through after everything is healed. A tattoo style that uses bold lines and colors (like Neotraditional) will make doing a coverup much easier.
This also isnt something that all tattoo artists do. Finding an artist with past cover-up experience is key here, Olga Szubiak, a tattoo artist at High Hopes Tattoo says.
The color generally fades a bit and if the cover-up was not designed well, the old dark color will show through. Trudy usually recommends that customers come back in after 4-6 weeks so that she can confirm the tattoo healed correctly and everything looks good.
Realism tattoos, like all tattoos, will fade over time. However, when done well and cared for properly, realism tattoos can age quite well and maintain their detail and clarity for many years.

Its important to wait until your tattoo is fully healed before considering a cover up. Covering up a tattoo that is still healing can increase the risk of infection and other complications. Generally, you should wait at least 2-3 months after getting a tattoo before considering a cover up.
Faded tattoos are easier to cover-up because the ink has had some time to dissipate, leaving the artist with something closer to a blank canvas. Dimmer tattoos wont require as many laser tattoo removal sessions before getting covered up.
