Portraits were placed in tombs as a memorial of family members. This type of portrait appeared in Egypt in the first century C.E., and remained popular for around 200 years.
This style of Roman-era mummy portrait has been found all across Egypt, but is most common in the Faiyum Basin area, particularly around the rich Roman city of Antinoopolis, whose upper-class inhabitants would have been able to afford the expensive mummification.
In the Egyptian cult of the dead, the Fayum portraits were by definition objects of worship since, as part of the mummies with which they were found, they were regarded as the immortal surrogate of the deceased. The dead men were identified with the god Osiris and the women with the god Isis (Woldering 228).
Fayum portrait, any of the funerary portraits dating from the Roman period (1st to the 4th century) found in Egyptian tombs throughout Egypt but particularly at the oasis of al-Fayyūm.
Three-dimensional funerary masks of painted plaster from Faiyum (1st century), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Based on literary, archaeological and genetic studies, it appears that those depicted were native Egyptians, who had adopted the dominant Greco-Roman culture.
The mummy portrait of a priest of Serapis is one of the examples that depict a priest of the Egyptain god Serapis. The portrait shows a man of mature years wearing a creamy-white tunic with pink calves on the right shoulder.
This specific mummification practice was concentrated primarily in and around the Fayum Basin (the region that gives the associated portraits their name) and dates to between the 1st and 3rd century AD. About 900 of these portraits are known, and all but a tiny fraction of them have been removed from their mummies.
