Leaving the bandage on for too long can result in infection, so always change your bandage within the stated timeframe. Most tattoos can be properly healed with 2 applications of the bandage, with each application being left on the skin for 1-2 days, for a 3 or 4 day total.
For example, a portrait tattoo or a design that is mostly light colors will not work as a coverup because the old tattoo will show through after everything is healed. A tattoo style that uses bold lines and colors (like Neotraditional) will make doing a coverup much easier. Some artists attempt to overpower the old ink with multiple layers packed with light ink, but even this technique will usually fade over time and allow the old art to be visible.
The color generally fades a bit and if the cover-up was not designed well, the old dark color will show through. Trudy usually recommends that customers come back in after 4-6 weeks so that she can confirm the tattoo healed correctly and everything looks good. Apply a small amount of fragrance-free and alcohol-free moisturizer to the tattoo. You can keep the covering off at this point to let your skin breathe. Keep this routine up for the first couple of weeks, and keep the tattoo out of the sun until its fully healed.
The new ink will undergo the same fading and microscopic migration as the old ink. What results is that most cover-ups look great on day one, but over time, the ink settles in such a way that the old tattoo will show through. The new tattoo must be dark enough to cover the old one completely. Black is often the best color to use, but very dark blues, greens, and browns can also work well. The artist will often need to add more than one layer of ink, which means the tattoo may take longer to heal.
After an average 3 to 5 sessions your old art will have faded enough to get going on the new piece, depending on what your new art is going to be. If your new art is going to be smaller or more detailed than the original tattoo, it is recommended to completely remove the old tattoo before starting on the new one.
