Common beliefs emerged that a roof strengthened a bridge or protected the floor planks from rain and snow. Many came to think that covered bridges were built to shelter the people and animals traversing them, and some claimed the barn-like appearance calmed uneasy animals crossing over rushing water.
167 Hartland Covered Bridge / Longest span
But it is simply a cost-cutting measure. Barns, bridges, and other wooden structures were typically painted red in the 1800s because it was cheap to make. All three ingredients were readily available: milk, rust, and lime.
The purpose of the covering is to protect the wooden structural members from the weather. Uncovered wooden bridges typically have a lifespan of only 20 years because of the effects of rain and sun, but a covered bridge can last over 100 years. In the United States, only about 1 in 10 survived the 20th century.
The first long-span bridges were wooden. Made from available timber, such as spruce and white pine, the bridges were flexible and strong but decayed quickly when exposed to rain and snow. By the early 1800s, bridge builders began to protect their bridges with roofs and siding making covered bridges.
The Canadian province of New Brunswick has 58 covered bridges, ing to the Government of New Brunswick. The Hartland Covered Bridge in Hartland is the worlds longest covered bridge, spanning 1,282 feet (391 m).
Although many states have modern, decorative covered bridges, there is at least one historical covered bridge still standing in 30 states. Pennsylvania has the most with 227, Ohio has 143, Vermont has 100 and Indiana has 93. READ MORE: Covered bridge trivia.
