Hashing. Although subject to some debate about its core efficacy, a hashing function is a common and well-accepted method for masking PII. Hashing is essentially a (theoretically) non-reversible encryption, where a one-time key is used to transform a piece of data into a complex, usually 256 digit, code.
Social Security Numbers, Taxpayer identification numbers, names of minors, dates of birth, financial account numbers, home addresses, passport numbers, and driver license numbers.
Sensitive information, like financial account numbers, bank account numbers, and an individuals social security number, must be concealed from public view. Other details like an individuals birth name, address, phone number, and email address might also need redaction to protect privacy and prevent identity theft.
Secure Sensitive PII in a locked desk drawer, file cabinet, or similar locked enclosure when not in use. When using Sensitive PII, keep it in an area where access is controlled and limited to persons with an official need to know. Avoid faxing Sensitive PII, if at all possible. 3.
