Left-sided heart failure: The left ventricle of the heart no longer pumps enough blood around the body. As a result, blood builds up in the blood vessels that carry blood away from the lungs. This causes shortness of breath, trouble breathing or coughing especially during physical exertion.
Heart failure can progress, so researchers have identified four stages of the disease A, B, C and D. Health care professionals also classify heart failure when it has progressed to stages C and D. This classification measures a patients overall heart function and severity of symptoms.
What are the symptoms of left-sided heart failure? Constant coughing. Shortness of breath with walking or bending over. Waking up short of breath or unable to lie flat at night. Weight gain. Swelling (edema) in your ankles, legs or abdomen.
On physical exam, the most common signs encountered are: Rales on lung auscultation indicative of pulmonary edema. Decreased breath sounds on lung auscultation suggestive of pleural effusion. S3 gallop on heart auscultation indicative of elevated left ventricular end-diastolic pressure.
Left-sided CHF is the most common form of CHF and begins when the left ventricle cannot effectively pump blood throughout the body. Eventually, this can lead to fluid retention, particularly around the lungs. Common symptoms include swelling, trouble breathing, and coughing.
With HFrEF, the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is equal to or less than 40%. This means your heart is only pumping 40% or less of the blood it contains out into the body with each beat. 6 This is considered the diagnostic hallmark of HFrEF.
Left-Sided Heart Failure Symptoms Bluish color in the fingertips and lips. Cough, which may bring up phlegm or mucus tinged with blood. Fatigue and weakness, even after resting. Rapid or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) Sudden, unexpected weight gain. Swelling in the ankles, legs, feet and/or abdomen. Trouble concentrating.
Left-Sided Heart Failure Symptoms If the chamber cant pump well, blood backs up in the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart. This backup leads to fluid accumulation in the lungs, which causes shortness of breath.
