Files with DOTX extension are template files created by Microsoft Word to have pre-formatted settings for generation of further DOCX files. A template file is created in order to have specific user settings that should be applied to subsequent flies created from these.
docx file is a Word document, while a . dotx file is a Word template. Both can be opened and edited in Microsoft Word, but a . dotx file opens as a new document to preserve the original template.

Dotx files can be opened and modified, but only via File--Open. Double clicking the file should create a document1, document2, etc, forcing a save as.
