Normal ejection fraction rates range between 50% and 70%. Function is considered borderline when it falls between 41% and 49%. This doesnt always mean that a person is developing heart failure, but it may be a sign of heart damage or a prior heart attack.
This is rated as: 45%70%, normal. 35%45%, mildly impaired. 25%35%, moderately impaired.
When heart function is less than 50% it can lead to cardiac arrest of an organism. Now if the heart function is less than 20%, it will lead to cardiac arrest. It wont be able to supply blood to the brain and other parts of the body which will eventually lead to the death of the person.
Additionally, how much blood a persons heart pumps out per beat, known as the ejection fraction (EF), may affect life expectancy. Doctors note a persons EF as a percentage. A normal output is 5570% . People with an EF under 40% may have a higher risk of dying from CHF.
What is the difference between compensated and decompensated heart failure? In compensated heart failure, symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath, and edema are stable or absent. In decompensated heart failure, those symptoms are worse, to the point where medical attention is required.
Overview. Heart failure means that your heart muscle doesnt pump as much blood as your body needs. Because your heart cant pump well, your heart and your body try to make up for it. This is called compensation.
Normal EF is in the range of 55% to 70%. As the percentage falls, it tells the doctor that the heart failure is getting worse. In general, if the EF falls below 30%, its relatively severe. A reading of 20% or below is very severe heart failure.
Compensation in the body The bodys hormone and nervous systems try to make up for this. They increase blood pressure, hold on to salt (sodium) and water in the body, and increase the heart rate. These responses are the bodys attempt to compensate for the poor blood circulation and the backup of blood.
