Creating outlines in Word is easy when you start with a blank document. Open a new document and make sure you are looking at the amp;quot;Homeamp;quot; tab on the ribbon. Before going further, click the amp;quot;no spacingamp;quot; button. Now change the font and spacing to proper MLA style, Times New Roman, 12. And it should be double spaced, which is the two. Add your header, your heading, and type your thesis. When you are ready to begin your outline, click on the multi-level list icon, then choose define new multi-level list. On the left, where it says amp;quot;click level to modifyamp;quot;, highlight the number one. Under number style for this level, open the drop-down list and choose the roman numerals. Now delete the parentheses and replace it with a period. Stay on this screen and now, highlight level two. This time select the capital letters. Donamp;#39;t forget to delete the parentheses and replace it with a period. For level 3, select the numbers one, two and three.

You can quickly add an outline level and make part of your document collapsible by adding a heading using Words built-in styles. After applying the heading style, youll see a small triangle when you move your cursor over the heading. Click the triangle to collapse the body text and subheadings below it.
The fact that you see the level option in the outline numbering tab of the paragraph style grayed out means that the level is already assigned in that menu. The level option in the paragraph style can be used to set additional styles for each level. To specify an outline level for a paragraph, 1) place the cursor on the paragraph in the editing window, 2) display the Paragraph dialog in the Paragraph group of the ribbon Home, 3) select the outline level you wish to set, and 4) click OK to close the dialog.
