Higher image quality translates into more available data when it comes to photo editing, giving RAWs a definitive edge over JPEGs. Editing programs like docHub Camera RAW, Bridge, or Lightroom are built for fine-tuning RAWs into polished final photos.
However, if you shoot both RAW and JPEG, your camera will produce JPEGs with the effects added, as well as RAWs without the effects. So if you want to see the effects while maintaining the integrity of the RAW file, then capturing both can be beneficial.
RAW photography refers to the unprocessed digital images captured directly from your cameras image sensor. It is different from the compressed image file you get when shooting in JPEG format, which is processed by the camera in order to reduce file size and make them easier to share online.
The bottom line. RAWs give you more information to work with, but you have to put more time into that work. If speed is of the essence, or you want a point-and-shoot experience that yields photos ready to use out of the box, JPEGs might actually be a better option than RAWs.
JPEG files are more convenient for everyday use and quick sharing, while RAW files are better suited for situations where you need maximum control over your images in post-processing, such as in challenging lighting conditions or for important travel or nature photography.
To start editing a RAW photo, you need to import it to Photomator first. You can do that by simply tapping a desired photo in the Files browser. This creates a new . photo file where Photomator stores the RAW photo along with all the adjustments and edits from your editing sessions.
Develop will launch immediately upon opening a RAW file, but is also accessible through the Tools and Filters menu when a RAW file is open. Once opened, swipe vertically on the image to access the edit menu. Once an option has been selected, swipe horizontally to enhance.
Generally, a RAW file will be between two and six times larger than a JPEG file. RAW files are bigger because they contain a much greater amount of image data. A JPEG image is essentially all that data compressed down into a smaller file size thats easier to share.
Since RAWs are read-only and cant be edited directly, the edits must be saved to a mediator file which is . PHOTO, in the case of Pixelmator Photo (other editors may also use sidecar files such as XMP, for instance).
Once youve taken your photos, you can upload them to your computer for editing, or you can use an app on your phone. For editing RAW photos, apps like VSCO, Snapseed, or Lightroom Mobile will work well. Shooting images in RAW format will ultimately give you much more control over your final images than JPEG will.
