Appropriate usage Append modifier to the reduced procedures CPT code. Ambulatory surgical centers (ASC) use modifier 52 to indicate the discontinuance of a procedure not requiring anesthesia.
-TC Technical Component The TC Modifier reflects that the Technical Component only of an x-ray or fluoroscopy is being billed by the ASC. This modifier represents the taking of the x-ray and ownership of the equipment used in the scan by the facility.
Ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) and Modifier 50 Bilateral procedures should be reported: Single unit on two separate lines or a single unit on one line with 2 in the unit field, for both procedures to be paid correctly.
Use modifier 50 to report bilateral procedures performed during the same operative session by the same physician in either separate operative areas (e.g., hands, feet, legs, arms, ears) or in the same operative area (e.g., nose, eyes, breasts).
Modifier SG must be appended as the first modifier to all surgical procedure codes (CPT/HCPCS) billed by an Ambulatory Surgery Center.
ASCs should not use the 51 Modifier on their claims, unless the payor requires its use. Even though Medicare EOBs have -51 Modifiers appended, DO NOT bill claims to Medicare using this modifier.
Facility payments for ASCs include the following services which are not paid separately: Nursing services, services of technical personnel, and other related services Use by the patient of ASC facilities including the operating room and the recovery room Drugs, including take-home medications, biological,
Modifier -50 is not an ASC-recognized modifier. Bilateral procedures should be reported as: a single unit on two separate lines; or with a 2 in the Until field. The multiple procedure reduction of 50 percent payment for the second procedure applies to all bilateral procedures.
Modifier -52 should not be used if there is another specific procedure code that appropriately describes the lesser or reduced service that was actually performed; the other procedure code is the most appropriate code and should be reported.
Modifier -53 is used to indicate discontinuation of physician services and is not approved for use for outpatient hospital services. The elective cancellation of a procedure should not be reported. Modifiers -73 and -74 are used to indicate discontinued surgical and certain diagnostic procedures only.
