An MI of 0:100:0 indicates the predominance of intermediate cells for example in pregnancy . An MI of 0: 60:40 is often found in women who are on oral contraceptives. Superficial cells predominance may be found mid cycle, whereas an MI of 90:10:0 can be expected in a post menopausal woman.
The Maturation Index (MI) The count should be performed on single cells. For example, in a normal menstruating woman at the time of ovulation, an MI of 0:35:65 would indicate that the smear contained no parabasal cells, 35% of intermediate cells, and 65% of superficial cells.
A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future. New cell changes can still form on your cervix.
The Maturation Index (MI) is a ratio obtained by performing a random cell count of the three major cell types shed from the vaginal squamous epithelium: parabasal, intermediate, and superficial cells.
Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem. If the Pap smear showed that the inflammation is severe, your doctor may want to find the cause, such as an infection. You may also need to have another Pap smear in six months to see if the inflammation has gone.
It is based on weighted proportions of cell types from the MI and calculated using Meisels formula: the percentage of superficial cells (S) plus 0.5 times the percent- age of intermediate cells (I) coded from the cytology sample [MV %S (0.5 %I)].
A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
The maturation index is a cytological examination that is based on the assumption that estrogen brings about maturation of the squamous cells of the vagina. The maturation index is useful for the evaluation of which therapies would be useful to treat vaginal hormonal symptoms.
