What causes high EGTs? In simple terms, high EGTs are a result of a rich running condition in your diesel engine. This means that the engine is burning too much fuel relative to the amount of air it is getting. You may notice the effects of this as black smoke coming from your tailpipe.
For normally aspirated engines, peak EGTs will be in the mid-1,500s, but with turbocharging, EGTs can be much higher into the 1,600-1,700 range, and one needs to be careful.
Keeping EGTs below 1,200 degrees is an accepted safe limit for towing. Excessively high EGTs are the result of a rich air/fuel ratio and are typically realized when engines are modified.
When dealing with a diesel vehicle, your EGT is a critical factor in its performance. Generally speaking, the lower your EGT, the better. At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety.
Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
A high EGT for a given thrust (by a engine) is a sign that the engine required more fuel for the same thrust, due to wear out of rotating components, etc, and the engine may require inspection.
There are various reasons for the rise of the exhaust gas temperature, including but not limited to air leakage, the operation status of the pulverizing system, the accumulation of dust in the heating area, and the atmospheric temperature of the surrounding environment.
Usually only one thing causes high EGTs, a lean fuel/air ratio. If you are sure there are no air leaks around the boots and manifold and the carbs are set up right, You might suspect the EGT probes or gauge.
The richer the air/fuel ratio in a diesel, the higher the EGT will be. Two things can create a rich mixture under heavy loads or at full throttle: the first is too much fuel, and the second is not enough air.
