The DITA ID attribute provides a method to uniquely identify content (topics or elements) to reference. In a DITA topic, you can assign a unique ID to an element to use the element when you are creating a conrefs (Content references) or cross-references (Cross-references) to the element from another topic.
In this blog post, we will discuss some best practices for naming conventions for IDs in HTML elements. Because topics are the basic units of information within DITA, the id attribute for the topic must be unique within the document instance. A topic architecture assembles topics into a deliverable by reference. To ensure that topics can be referenced, the id attribute is required on the topic element.

DITA maps often encode structures that are specific to a particular medium or output, for example, Web pages or a PDF document. Attributes, such as @deliveryTarget and @toc , are designed to help processors interpret the DITA map for each kind of output.
The id attribute specifies a unique id for an HTML element (the value must be unique within the HTML document). The id attribute is most used to point to a style in a style sheet, and by JavaScript (via the HTML DOM) to manipulate the element with the specific id.
