Mike warns that cover-up tattoos can be harder to heal since the skin below has already been damaged.
A handful of studies have found that when wounds are kept moist and covered, blood vessels regenerate faster and the number of cells that cause inflammation drop more rapidly than they do in wounds allowed to air out. It is best to keep a wound moist and covered for at least five days.
Touch-ups have the same healing protocol as initial tattoos. A touch-up, whether minimal or a full remodel, will more than likely require the same healing time as the initial tattoo.
After an average 3 to 5 sessions your old art will have faded enough to get going on the new piece, depending on what your new art is going to be. If your new art is going to be smaller or more detailed than the original tattoo, it is recommended to completely remove the old tattoo before starting on the new one.
In the case of covering a black tattoo, even a layer of new black on top of the old can often fail to totally hide the old art. A careful look or sometimes even a casual glance can usually pick out the old tattoo once the new one has fully healed.
Successful cover ups also take longer. After getting the design on your skin, it is ideal to let the new tattoo heal and settle over the old one for a few months.
The same applies to tattoo ink combining together underneath the skin. Black is the most effective color to cover up an old tattoo.
Saniderm is a self adhesive, breathable, waterproof clear dressing and is the leading form of aftercare when it comes to tattoo healing. It is quickly becoming the industry standard and has been known to help speed up healing by up to 60%.
