3D animation, also referred to as CGI, or just CG, is made by generating images using computers. That series of images are the frames of an animated shot.
SFX are overseen by a special effects supervisor who ensures their execution is done responsibly and safely. Visual effects, on the other hand, are added to imagery captured during production. VFX can include CGI but also other techniques.
CGI has a better scope than traditional animation and tends to look better, or flashier, to the average audience. It requires specialized tools and skills to produce. Like animation, it can take weeks, months, or even years to complete long projects. One benefit of CGI is that a model only needs to be created once.
While CG and CGI are closely related, they serve different purposes and applications within the broader scope of digital visual arts. CG encompasses a wide range of techniques and tools for creating and manipulating images, while CGI focuses specifically on generating realistic imagery for media and entertainment.
The terms VFX and CGI are often used interchangeably. Visual Effects (VFX) are created using fusion a digital imagery and live action shots. CGI, on the other hand, is anything created digitally. They are (VFX and CGI) closely associated with each other, albeit they are not equivalent concepts.
Special effects, or SFX are realized on set they are things like purposeful and controlled explosions, gunshot wounds, etc. An example of VFX would be the dragons flying through the sky in Game of Thrones, or a spaceship flying through space in Star Wars.
A simple way to understand the difference is by looking at it as a subset relationship; VFX is the parent category that includes CGI and SFX. While VFX encompasses all visual manipulation, CGI specifically refers to computer-generated imagery.
VFX is adaptable to various production environments, allowing for integration with live-action footage. CGI is less flexible once creation has begun, as changes can be costly and time-consuming. Combines live-action footage with digital enhancements and practical effects.
