If you are doing twos complement (signed) arithmetic, overflow flag on means the answer is wrong - you added two positive numbers and got a negative, or you added two negative numbers and got a positive. If you are doing unsigned arithmetic, the overflow flag means nothing and should be ignored.
Perhaps the most elegant solution is to check for the sign of the sum and compare it against the signs of the numbers added. Obviously, two positive numbers added together should give a positive result, and two negative numbers added together should give a negative result.
By using bit fields sufficiently large to handle the magnitude of the sums, we arrive at the correct answers. In these sample problems weve been able to detect overflow errors by performing the addition problems in decimal form and comparing the results with the binary answers.
Addition is said to overflow if the result is too big to fit in the available digits. A 4-bit number, for example, has the range [0, 15]. 4-bit binary addition overflows if the result exceeds 15.
Overflow can also occur when we add two negative numbers and get a positive result. In some cases, we can have both overflow and carry-out. Consider the operation (6)+(8)=14. This translates to 1010+1000=(1)0010.
Binary extension fields have the form F2m , where. m 1. A binary extension field contains 2m elements, all field elements may be represented as binary. polynomials of degree at most m - 1: F2m = 1fm-1xm-1 +
So overflow can be detected by checking Most docHub Bit(MSB) of two operands and answer. But Instead of using a 3-bit Comparator, Overflow can also be detected using 2 Bit Comparator just by checking Carry-in(C-in) and Carry-Out(C-out) from MSBs. Consider the N-Bit Addition of 2s Complement number. C-out.
In a general scenario, binary search mid-value computed with, mid=(low+high)/2. However, with a vast list of elements, high would be a very large value. As a result, its possible that its beyond the Integer limit. Its known as an integer overflow.
