Without an ACL, the knee is very unstable (and weak) during lateral movement.
Its a lot better than tearing a ligament (just ask Rondo, Brady, or Welker). Bone is one of two tissues in the body that heals without leaving a scar. In time, broken bones return to being healthy, normal bones, with no residual weakness, no abnormalities, and no defects.
Why is the ACL particularly susceptible to injury? The ACL is the most common ligament in the knee to suffer injury. If the shin bone translates, or moves, forward excessively on the thigh bone and rotates, it can cause the ACL to stretch and tear partially or completely.
One of the most painful injuries an athlete can face is a torn Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). A torn ACL has derailed the careers of many high-profile athletes and can be extremely painful and debilitating. While these injuries can be detrimental, recovery is possible.
Approximately 150,000 ACL injuries occur in the United States each year. Female athletes par- ticipating in basketball and soccer are two to eight times more likely to suffer an ACL injury compared to their male counterparts.
The recovery after an ACL reconstruction is probably the most difficult part of the whole process. After a week or two, most athletes and patients are walking on the leg with no pain and near full range of motion.
Often, the injury can lead to long-term problems in stability and degeneration. When the ACL is injured, the pain can be excruciating -- or minor -- but the result is debilitating.
A complete tear in the ACL will not heal without surgery. Higher Risk Sports. Football, soccer, and basketball all show a higher risk of ACL injury, though other athletes and non-athletes can experience this injury. Non-Contact Doesnt Reduce Risk.
