Removing an Engraving To remove an engraving, a jeweler has to laser the metal at the area of the engraving, blasting it to level out the texture of the metal. Once this is done, the jeweler polishes the item and restores it to a smooth, blank surface.
Removing Engraving from Wood or Acrylic to remove laser engraving from wood, try lightly sanding the engraved area using fine-grit sandpaper until the engraving has been removed. Start with a higher grit sandpaper and move to a lower grit as needed.
Its not hard to do at all and today Im going to show you exactly how to with just three easy steps! Step One Use Wood Filler to Cover Up Etched Lettering. Step Two Grab a Sanding Block. Step Three Apply Paint.
First, the jeweler has to polish off all of the existing plating and laser off the original engraving from the surface. Next, the jeweler re-plates the item and then engraves it as the final step. This is because plating over the engraving will remove the color contrast that makes the engraving visible.
If youre laser engraving glass, assuming it fractured the surface on the first pass, a second pass is likely to make it look worse. If youre using a CO2 laser to mark anodized aluminum, you can go over it again within reason, especially if part of the material was out of focus, like on a cup.
It is true that you can sometimes buff out an engraving that isnt very deep and potentially engrave the item again, even over the same place. Unfortunately, plated metal doesnt work like this at all youll just buff the plating off and reveal the metal underneath the plating, essentially destroying the item.
Sanding or Polishing the Error If the engraved mistake is shallow and on a suitable material such as wood, acrylic or some metals then you can simply sand and polish it away. Make sure you use masking tape to protect the area around the mistake before sanding with coarse grit sandpaper.
Removing an engraving isnt super expensive, typically its the same price as polishing, but depends on the material of the ring. Removal can usually be done in one day. Its important to note that the process of removing an engraving may not always result in a completely restored appearance.
