An endorsement, also known as a rider, adds, deletes, excludes or changes insurance coverage. An endorsement/rider can also be used to increase standard limits of coverage and take precedent over the original agreement or policy.
Like an Additional Insured, a certificate holder is a third party that may be named on your COI. Unlike an Additional Insured, however, a certificate holder has no protection or coverage under the policy. Therefore, a certificate holder cannot file a claim under the policy.
In an insurance policy, an additional insured refers to anyone other than the policyholder who is covered by an insurance policy. Coverage might be limited to a single event or it could last for the policys lifetime.
An additional insured extends liability insurance coverage beyond the named insured to include other individuals or groups. An additional insured endorsement protects the additional insured under the named insurers policy allowing them to file a claim if sued.
A wrap-up exclusion endorsement is used to remove coverage from a contractors insurance policies to the extent they overlap with the coverages provided for the contractor under a wrap-up insurance program.
Vendors coverage is additional insured coverage, usually under a manufacturers general liability policy, for specified vendors with respect to their distribution or sale of the manufacturers products designated in the schedule on the endorsement.
For example, say you use a contractor on a project who causes an accident that leads to you being sued. If youre an additional insured on the contractors policy, you can make a claim to pay for the damages and legal fees, rather than relying on your own insurance.
The purpose of additional insured endorsements is to keep the burden of risk closest to those parties most likely to create losses, which typically is third parties contracted to perform the work.
