You will need a drywall knife wider than the dent. If it is a very large dent you will have to learn to spread out the compound and smooth it. If the dent is small put a small amount of dry wall compound, also called mud, on the knife and smooth it into the dent.
Take a small amount of spackling compound or lightweight joint compound on the putty knife and apply it to the dent. Use the knife to spread the compound evenly, filling the dent completely. Remove any excess compound, leaving a smooth surface. Allow the compound to dry ing to the manufacturers instructions.
Fill dents and tiny holes with lightweight spackle using your finger or a putty knife. Make sure the spackle completely fills the dent or hole and is level with the rest of the undamaged wall. Allow the spackle to dry for 15 to 30 minutes or the time recommended by the manufacturer.
To fix dents or gouges, fill the damaged areas with 2-part wood filler. Once its dry, sand it smooth so you can prime and paint it. To repair a rotten door frame, remove all of the rotted wood with a chisel. Fill in the area with an epoxy wood filler, let it harden, and then apply finish.
Grab your drywall patch and place it over the hole in the wall. Scoop up more drywall mud, then add a thin layer over the entire drywall patch. Smooth the mud out from the patch about 2 in (5.1 cm) to really anchor it on. If you need to cut your patch, do that with scissors first before putting it on the wall.

And finally you sand it down so its smooth. And even with the rest of the panel.
How About Dents? Simply apply joint compound with a putty knife over the dent so that the mud is filling in the dent and is flush with the wall. Sand lightly when dry.
Dont repair a dented door with spackling paste or wood putty; neither compound bonds very well to metal. Instead, use an auto-body filler, which is specifically formulated for adhering to metal surfaces. This type of filler also dries rock hard so it sands smooth and flat, and it produces a perfect surface for paint.
