The ampersand () is a special character in XML used to begin entity references. To treat it as data, it must be escaped as amp;. This preserves its intended meaning while maintaining XML structure.
In HTML, the ampersand is used to code foreign letters and special characters such as the copyright and trademark symbols.
The ampersand character must be escaped. The greater than and less than characters do no have to be escaped but its good practice to do it. The double quotes in the data must be escaped. The double quotes do not need escaping as they are contained within a single quoted attribute.
