Writing captions Clearly identify the people and locations that appear in the photo. Include the date and day the photograph was taken. Provide some context or background to the reader so he or she can understand the news value of the photograph.
Captioning Style Captions (AP Style preferred) should answer the who, what, when, where and why of the subject depicted in the photograph. Captions should be written in English in the present tense and include a date. Typically, captions are written in two parts.
How do you write captions? Write like a human. Make the most of your first line. Add value: educate, inspire, inform. Include a call to action. Stay true to your brand voice.
A caption appears next to the image and identifies or describes the image, and credits the source. There is no standard format for captions. Point out any aspects of the image that you think are noteworthy or relevant.
Captions must be accurate and answer the five basic questions of good journalism (who, what, where, when, why). All entries must have accurate captions and descriptions, written in English. If the captions have been translated, please also provide the caption in the original language.
A caption refers to a short piece of text placed under/ beside a picture in a social media post, magazine, book, or newspaper that describes that specific picture or explains what is happening in the picture (for example if there are people in the picture the caption may describe what those people are doing or saying).
A good caption will describe details that are not obvious, like the location, the backstory, or the specific event taking place in the photograph. Let your caption intrigue your readers to investigate the story further.
1) Your caption should answer as many of the 5-W questions as possible: What, Who, Where, When, Why (or How). 2) Your caption should only describe and not editorialize unless your editor insists on that specifically. Then you should be able to deliver a loaded caption with its own built-in editorial comment.
