Bates Numbering (or Bates Stamping) assigns unique identifiers to each page in a collection of documents. Its a way to index document contents so theyre easier to find later.
The Board strongly encourages briefs and accompanying exhibits to be sequentially numbered, also known as Bates Numbering. Bates Numbering can either be done within the PDF itself starting at the first page of the document or it can be handwritten at the bottom right hand corner of the page.
Bates Stamping: This procedure assigns a Bates stamp to the lower right corner of a document. The Bates prefix is specified with at least one letter and up to six letters and sequential numbering with seven digits, starting 0000001, unless otherwise instructed at or prior to time of job commencement.
Bates numbering best practices Use the right number of digits. In Bates numbering, the number of digits in a number is often used to indicate how many pages are in a specific document set. Add extra information. Make sure each number is unique. Keep it consistent.
Prefix: A prefix is a set of characters that is added to the beginning of the Bates number. This can be used to identify a specific case or document. Bates number: The Bates number is the unique identifier that is assigned to each page.
But, consistent with The Bluebook, the first citation should make it very clear what is being referenced, such as (Bates Jones000001) or (Bates d123-002), and subsequent consecutive cites should follow the usual practice of Id. followed by the page number, such as (Id. 000017) or (Id. -017).
It gained its name from the Bates Automatic Numbering-Machine, patented in the 1890s by Edwin G. Bates. This sequential-numbering stamp was used to manually mark each page in a record.
What is Bates numbering? Bates numbering is a method of sequentially numbering pages with a reference identifier to make them easier to locate and reference. This could be as simple as sequential numbers like 0001 and 0002, or it may include alphanumeric strings (such as ABC0001 and ABC0002).
