Coverstitch does not cut- it looks like one or two lines of stitches on one side and a crocheted line on the other. It is mostly used for finished hems, especially where more flex is needed. If your machine does both things, then you can use the serging for the seams, and it will work.
A coverstitch machine is particularly helpful when sewing with knit fabric. Knit fabric is stretchy and seams and are prone to popping if the stitches arent properly reinforced. If you sew with a lot of clothing with knit fabric then it probably is worth the investment to get a cover stitch machine.

Twin needles are the best substitute for a coverstitch, but they are very finicky. If you struggle with tunneling or snapped threads when youre using a twin needle, a coverstitch will make your life so much easier. Your stitches will be strong.

The cover stitch does not use the cutting blades on the serger. It is created using two or three needles, one for each row of topstitching, and one looper to create a decorative stitch used for hemming. The chain stitch uses only one needle and the looper to create a straight-line stitch used for seaming.
A coverstitch is a professional looking hem that looks like two rows of stitching on the top and a serger like stitch on the back. The benefit of a coverstitch is its stretchability and the covering of the raw edge all in one pass.
