this is dr andrew young at st johnamp;#39;s in santa monica and weamp;#39;re going to take a few moments and talk about one of the difficult challenges in knee replacement specifically replacing a post-traumatic knee after a prior acl repair now this turns out to be one of the most difficult operations because thereamp;#39;s often ligamentous sometimes multi-ligamentous injury thereamp;#39;s post-traumatic scarring thereamp;#39;s deformity and thereamp;#39;s also the problem of hardware used to fix the acl graft so of all those topics weamp;#39;re just going to take a deep dive in how we manage hardware removal using the robotic system okay so weamp;#39;ll start with the most common type of post-traumatic arthritis that we see after an acl repair so we see a lot of arthritic change thereamp;#39;s loss of joint space thereamp;#39;s irregularity in the medial femoral condyle thereamp;#39;s subluxation or shifting of the tibia but very importantly this patient with a prior acl

Not fixing your ACL (playing sports with a torn ACL) opens the meniscus up to damage. You lose the shock absorber of you knee when this happens. The result is a much higher chance of arthritis.
A bad sprain can involve a small tear, but in most cases, it is only when the ligament has been stretched too far. ACL injuries are graded on a scale of one to three. Your doctor will determine the grade of injury you have following a physical examination and by using imaging tests such as X-rays or an MRI.
The cyclops lesion, also known as localized anterior arthrofibrosis, is a painful anterior knee mass associated with loss of extension that arises as a complication of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, although has rarely been reported in patients with ACL injuries that have not been reconstructed.
The short answer is that a partial tear of the ACL will not heal on its own. People often think that because the ligament is not completely torn it will heal on its own, but this is typically not the case. The ACL does not heal on its own because it does not have any blood supply to it.
In patients who have only a partial tear, nonsurgical treatment may be an option. Some patients who have a complete ACL tear do not require surgery and are able to return to activities, such as cycling or running with or without a brace. Your doctor will discuss all treatment options with you.
Follow your doctors directions for wearing a brace or an immobilizer, which limits movement of your knee. Wrapping your knee with an elastic bandage may help reduce or prevent swelling. Use crutches as directed in the first few days after your injury if your doctor recommends them. Rest your knee when possible.
The prognosis (outlook) for a partially torn ACL is often good, with the recovery and rehabilitation period usually lasting at least 3 months. However, some patients with partial ACL tears may still have instability symptoms.
While each person is different, you may heal from a partial ACL tear within 3 months, especially if you undergo physical therapy to rebuild strength and function in your knee.
