Zip Code validation definition: Matches a valid ZIP Code in the USPS postal data file. The ZIP Code in the address accurately refers to the city or town listed in the address. The address follows the correct ZIP Code format, including the ZIP + 4
When we are writing zip codes for the U.S. mail, the postal service prefers that punctuation not be used. It also prefers that lettering be in all CAPS; the address be printed on the center of the envelope with a flush left margin; and the + 4 number be included.
The address is technically deliverable with nothing more than a ZIP Code. The ZIP Code 12345 is kind of in Schenectady, NY and it belongs to the General Electric Co.
Current Postal Code Range in the United States The current postal codes in the United States range from 00001 99950.
A ZIP Code is a 5-digit number that specifies an individual destination post office or mail delivery area. ZIP Codes determine the destination of letters for final sorting and delivery. Each ZIP Code designates a collection of delivery routes used by mail carriers and areas serviced by the USPS.

The four extra numbers are added after a hyphen to complete the ZIP+4. So what do the extra numbers mean? These last 4 digits represent specific delivery routes within delivery areas. This extra detail means an even more precise matching to a more granular level.
