When writing their essays, students need to write as close as possible to the number of words required. This means that if a scholarship essay calls for 500 words, 450-500 is great, but 510 or 100 is NOT.
How to Write a Scholarship Essay Start the essay writing process early. Understand the scholarship providers overall mission and purpose. Follow the scholarship essay instructions. Steer clear from essay topics that focus on negativity or pessimism. Dont be afraid to get personal. Seek out writing advice and feedback.
In general, scholarship essays are meant to be about 500 words or one page in length. Many scholarship essays will provide some kind of minimum requirement for the word or page count of your essay. But if you cant find one then you are generally fine to stick to 500 words or one page.
The format of a 500-word scholarship essay is similar to a shorter essay. Each paragraph is about 75-125 words, and it consists of 3-5 well-written sentences. If you are writing a story or personal anecdote, the formatting can be more like a novel than a news article. It is ok to use 10% less or more words.
Recommended fonts include: Arial, Calibri, Tahoma, Times New Roman and Verdana. Do not use a script or cute style font. Do not use a font that is too small or too large. If a font size is not specified in the instructions, use a size between 10 and 12 points for the body of your essay and 14 points for the heading.
Dont use words like finally, in sum or in conclusion. Dont repeat or sum up in any way. Dont start too many sentences with the word I. Dont tell the reader explicitly, I am a unique and interesting person. Instead, let the reader glean this from your unique and interesting essay.
Unless specified otherwise, scholarship essays should always use the following formatting: Double spaced. Times New Roman font. 12 point font.
