While Egyptian hieroglyphs were deciphered in the 19th century, there are still a number of ancient languages that are not understood today. "There are basically three kinds of decipherment problems," Allen told Live Science.
The ancient Egyptians used the distinctive script known today as hieroglyphs (Greek for "sacred words") for almost 4,000 years. Hieroglyphs were written on papyrus, carved in stone on tomb and temple walls, and used to decorate many objects of cultic and daily life use.
Writing. Not everyone learned to read and write in ancient Egypt. Only one group of people called scribes was allowed to have this knowledge.
There are two basic types of hieroglyphs: Ideograms and Phonograms. Often the same image can be both an ideogram and a phonogram.
Hieroglyphs are written in rows or columns and can be read from left to right or from right to left. You can distinguish the direction in which the text is to be read because the human or animal figures always face towards the beginning of the line. Also the upper symbols are read before the lower.
Hieroglyphs consist of three kinds of glyphs: phonetic glyphs, including single-consonant characters that function like an alphabet; logographs, representing morphemes; and determinatives, which narrow down the meaning of logographic or phonetic words.
Hieroglyphs are always read from top to bottom but sometimes you start on the left side (like in English) and sometimes on the right. The animals, birds or people used in hieroglyphs always face the beginning of the sentence so that tells you where to start.
Since Egyptian hieroglyphs were so complicated and convoluted, Egyptian writing was very difficult to learn. Those who could read and write fluently were a small percentage of the population-estimated at one percent.
A name written in hieroglyphs embodied a person's identity. If it was obliterated, the person's identity was lost, along with his or her means to continue living in the afterworld. The names of pharaohs such as Tutankhamun and Queen Hatshepsut, for example, were removed from temple walls by their successors.
The ankh is one of the most common ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, used in art, writing and decorations. It represents the word “life” and life itself, as well as heaven, male & female, the morning sun, and the earth.
