The element provides a top-level container for multiple topics when you create documents using the ditabase document type. The element lets you create any sequence of concept, task, and reference topics, and the ditabase document type lets you further nest these topic types inside each other.
DITA includes three main topic types: Task, Concept, and Reference. Tasks are used to describe how to perform a procedure. Concepts present descriptive information so the reader can understand the background and context of a subject. Reference topics provide detailed facts, often in a table.
The base topic types provided by DITA ( a generic topic, plus concept, task, and reference ) provide a usable starter set that can be adopted for immediate authoring. All topics have the same basic structure, regardless of topic type: title, description, prolog, and body.
The latest version of DITA (DITA 1.3) includes five specialized topic types: Task, Concept, Reference, Glossary Entry, and Troubleshooting. Each of these five topic types is a specialization of a generic Topic type, which contains a title element, a prolog element for metadata, and a body element.
Most topic types contain some common elements, like a Title and Short Description. Some topic types contain unique elements that are specific to the purpose of that topic. Tasks, for instance, consist of a series of steps as well as elements to define prerequisites, context, and results.
Concept topics typically explain or define some idea. They often include background information that users might need to understand before they work with a product or start a task. Use concept topics to: Describe a system, product, or solution. Outline a process.
