- We are going to talk about how to change your tone of voice. Its really challenging but were going to give you some starting steps. So lets get into those details. (dramatic music) Hello again, Alex Lyon here. This channel is all about helping you communicate more effectively, especially if you are an emerging leader. I made a video a while back about tone of voice and all that it included, and that video is about your emotions and the attitude you give off when youre talking. So this video is not about, lets say, how to take a high pitch voice and speak in a lower pitch voice. I think were talking about something much more important than that. And that its how you come across through your tone, and the related non-verbals that you give off, like your attitude, your facial expression, the emotions that you give off to the people around you. Different tones in pinyin will lead to a different character and meaning of each Chinese word. As mentioned, there are mainly four tonal categories written in pinyin: high, rising, falling-rising and falling.
First tone: a level and higher pitch. Second tone: rising, start from a lower pitch and end at a slightly higher pitch. Third tone: falling rising, start at a neutral tone then dip to a lower pitch before ending at a higher pitch.
Before a 1st, 2nd or 4th tone, the 3rd tone is pronounced as a low tone. Before another 3rd tone, the first 3rd tone is changed into a rising tone. In final position, the 3rd tone is often (but not always) a low tone. In isolation, the 3rd tone is usually pronounced as a falling-rising tone.
There are four tones in Chinese, and technically a fifth tone: the first tone (high/flat), the second tone (rising), third tone (low/flat) and fourth tone (falling), and the fifth neutral tone (toneless tone). If playback doesnt begin shortly, try restarting your device.
Mandarin Pinyin First Tone is called 一声 (yī shēng) in Chinese, literally meaning the first sound. It starts high and maintain the same high pitch the whole process. So it sounds high and flat. That is why it is also known as The High Level Tone.
As mentioned, there are mainly four tonal categories written in pinyin: high, rising, falling-rising and falling.
Vietnamese is a tonal language. Accents are used to denote six distinctive tones: level (ngang), acute-angry (sắc), grave-lowering (huyền), smooth-rising hỏi, chesty-raised (ng), and chesty-heavy (nặng).
That is, the first tone is high and flat pitch, the second is rising pitch, the third is a low falling-rising pitch, and the fourth is falling pitch. Well discuss this further below. These tones can be seen on a tone chart like the one below.
