Types of quotes In-text quotes. An in-text quote is a short quote that fits into and completes a sentence youve written. Indirect quotes. An indirect quote is when you paraphrase ideas from a source. Direct quotes. A direct quote is when you take text directly from a source without changing anything.
When you quote, you include the words and ideas of others in your text exactly as they have expressed them. You signal this inclusion by placing quotation marks ( ) around the source authors words and providing an in-text citation after the quotation.
In fact, if you can remember the three main rules below, you should be in good shape. 1 Place punctuation marks inside quotation marks. 2 Capitalize the first letter of the quoted sentence. 3 Include an opening quotation mark at the beginning of each new quoted paragraph.
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
The triple quotation is a nice way to be able to include other types of quotation within your string without having to use escape characters. For example: print(He said \my names John\) That example requires escape characters \ to use double quote marks.
Activity 1 guided Direct speech or dialogue to separate the words someone in a sentence actually says from the rest of the sentence. Titles of books/movies. Citing from another source- from a book or internet site. Word or phrase that we see as jargon/technical language.
Quotation marks are ALWAYS used in pairs, one at the beginning of the quoted text and one at the end. The same rule applies to titles and words used in a special sense or for emphasis. Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote.
About In-Text Citation In-text citations include the last name of the author followed by a page number enclosed in parentheses. Heres a direct quote (Smith 8). If the authors name is not given, then use the first word or words of the title.
