PID: Every process is assigned a PID (Process Identifier) which is a unique identifier that is associated with a running process in the system.
There are no differences in the output because the meanings are the same. The difference between ps -ef and ps aux is due to historical divergences between POSIX and BSD systems. At the beginning, POSIX accepted the -ef while the BSD accepted only the aux form. Both list all processes of all users.
ps displays status information about processes, and optionally, the threads running under each process. By default, for each process that is associated with the users terminal, ps displays the process ID (PID), TTY, processor time used (TIME), and name of the command (COMM).
The STAT column in the ps command output shows you the current status of the process. The two most common entries in the STAT column are S for sleeping and R for running. A sleeping process is one that isnt currently active. A running process is one that is currently executing on the CPU.
The ps command, short for Process Status, is a command line utility that is used to display or view information related to the processes running in a Linux system.
The output of ps also tells you the process ID of the background process and the terminal from which it was run. % ps PID TTY TIME COMMAND 8048 020 0:12 sh 8699 020 0:02 ps % In its basic form, ps lists the following: Process ID (PID) A unique number assigned by UNIX to the process.
