brought to you by our beady instruments this video will show you how to align the TV monitor microscope to the focal point of a physical electronics 5000 series x-ray photoelectron spectrum etre this procedure requires a slotted silver specimen standard which is mounted on a recessed sample mount the RBD part number is six one two two three six re this slotted sample is used to determine the precise location of the analyzers focal point by moving the sample stage and determining where the silver xbs signal is and where it drops off as the sample is moved to where the analyzer is looking into a slit by comparing the microscope image on the TV monitor to the analyzer signal you can determine the precise analyzer focal point the analyzer lens design accommodates a number of different areas that are determined by changing the analyzer aperture knob and also the aperture setting in the software by locating the smallest hole in the silver specimen and adjusting the XY and z axis on the spec

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a quantitative technique for measuring the elemental composition of the surface of a material, and it also determines the binding states of the elements. XPS normally probes to a depth of 10 nm.
The carbon 1s line (for hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon groups) have also been used to calibrate the binding-energy scale for XPS measurements with non-conducting specimens; a binding energy of 284.8 eV has been assumed for this purpose. All energies are referred to the Fermi level.
An accuracy of 10% is typically quoted for routinely performed XPS atomic concentrations. For specific carefully performed and characterised measurements better accuracy is possible, but for quantification based on standard relative sensitivity factors, precision is achieved not accuracy.
That is, broadening of a peak may indicate: a change in the number of chemical bonds contributing to a peak shape, a change in the sample condition (x-ray damage) and/or differential charging of the surface (localised differences in the charge state of the surface).
The survey spectrum is a low energy resolution, high sensitivity acquisition across the entire binding energy scale, typically 1200 to -5 eV. It is acquired at a high pass energy, for AXIS instruments this is 160 eV, and the step size is 1 eV.
In XPS spectra of materials, all binding energies should be corrected using a standard. Usually, carbon element with binding energy of C 1s = 284.6 eV is used as an internal standard. You should shift the binding energies of your samples based on this value.
Chemical shift arises in the initial state from the displacement of the electronic charge from the atom towards its ligands, reducing the electrostatic potential at the atom. There is a final state shift due to the polarization of the ligand by the core on the central atom.
The most prevalent electron spectrometer for XPS is the hemispherical electron analyzer. They have high energy resolution and spatial selection of the emitted electrons.
The maximum sample size that can be analyzed in most XPS instruments is on the order of 20 cm2 and often on the order of a few cm2. Allowed sample heights are also instrument dependent, but typically are 25 mm.
The variation of binding energy results in the shift of the corresponding XPS peak, ranging from 0.1eV to 10eV. This effect is termed as chemical shift, which can be applied to studying the chemical status of element in the surface. Therefore, XPS is also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA).
