The main downside of through-hole vias is that they can be quite large, which can take up valuable space on the board. In addition, because they go all the way through the board, they can be more susceptible to electrical interference.
The aspect ratio of a via is the ratio between the depth of the hole and the diameter of the hole (hole depth to hole diameter). For instance, the aspect ratio for a standard circuit board at 0.062 inches thick with 0.020 inch thru-hole in it, would be 3 to 1.
Pads generally have a large hole to accommodate a wire or pin and are "all layer", i.e. the hole passes through all layers. Vias have a small hole and copper land and are generally used for connecting tracks or copper between layers.
To summarize, via fences and via stitching are useful techniques that are sometimes borrowed from RF PCB layout, but only if used properly. If you're not sure how to use copper pour and stitching vias to target cavity resonances or EMI, then you probably shouldn't use them.
Minimum-sized vias (0.25-0.3 mm) are typically preferred. Smaller epoxy-filled vias require less material; however, depending on board thickness, smaller vias may necessitate laser drilling.
The typical layout shows a via capture pad size of 0.660 mm, a via size of 0.254 mm, and an inner space and trace of 0.102 mm. With this layout, only one trace can be routed between the vias.
Via in pad is the design practice of placing a via in the copper landing pad of a component. Compared to standard PCB via routing, via in pad allows a design to use smaller component pitch sizes and further reduce the PCBs overall size.
These via-in-pad guidelines include: Use the smallest via diameter possible. ... Follow the component manufacturer's recommendations for component placement and via capping or filling. Use micro-vias that only go through one layer of the board. Have your fabricator cap the underside (non-component side) with solder mask.
In today's PCB industry, standard Aspect Ratio is 8:1, that is. If board thickness is 1.6mm, hole size must be >=0.20mm.
The main drawback to filled vias is that they can add significant costs to the board. The other methods should have no impact on cost whatsoever. Every design has different requirements and constraints.
