The manual says a RAW file allocates 12 bits/pixel. I also know that RAW file is obviously Uncompressed because its the sensor data itself. There has been no transformation to any of the other popular image formats.
The more pixels an image contains, the bigger the file will be on your computer. Typically images will be supplied as JPEGs, and an A4 (210mm x 297mm or 8¼” x 11¾”) image at 72 ppi will create a JPEG of approximately 500kb or half a megabyte.
For regular photos, then 3:2 or 4:3 would suffice. When choosing a format, think about the type of camera you have. To maintain quality, the ratio of your image size should never exceed your camera sensor's. For instance, if you're using a micro four-thirds camera, stick to 4:3 or 1:1.
Professional photographers and serious enthusiasts capture still images as raw files whenever possible. The reason is simple: raw files provide more image data and give photographers much greater control over white balance, saturation, sharpening and contrast in their images.
The short answer is compression. Image files are usually compressed, either lossless or lossy. The amount of compression will be affected by the specific image and the type of compression and this results in different file sizes for images with the same pixel dimensions.
How big is a RAW image? The size of a RAW file depends on the size of the sensor, and whether your camera is an MFT, APS-C, full-frame or medium format camera. Most RAW files are sized between 20 - 40 MB per file.
Go RAW for Detailed, Stylized Shots The RAW format is ideal if you are shooting with the intent of editing the images later. Shots where you are trying to capture a lot of detail or color, and images where you want to tweak light and shadow, should be shot in RAW.
A RAW image file roughly works out to be around the same size as the number of megapixels of the camera – so for example, a 20 megapixel camera will save a RAW file of around 20 megabytes.
Also, depending on the camera, the RAW file format retains 12-bit or 14-bit data, resulting in an image with a far greater tonal range than an 8-bit JPEG or TIFF file.
Hi-res images are at least 300 pixels per inch (ppi). This resolution makes for good print quality, and is pretty much a requirement for anything that you want hard copies of, especially to represent your brand or other important printed materials. Prevent printing regrets (because ink is expensive)!
