A sample is just a part of a population. For example, lets say your population was every American, and you wanted to find out how much the average person earns. Time and finances stop you from knocking on every door in America, so you choose to ask 1,000 random people. This one thousand people is your sample.
Sampling is the selection of a subset of the population of interest in a research study. In the vast majority of research endeavors, the participation of an entire population of interest is not possible, so a smaller group is relied upon for data collection.
What makes a good sample? A good sample should be a representative subset of the population we are interested in studying, therefore, with each participant having equal chance of being randomly selected into the study.
For example, a researcher intends to collect a systematic sample of 500 people in a population of 5000. He/she numbers each element of the population from 1-5000 and will choose every 10th individual to be a part of the sample (Total population/ Sample Size = 5000/500 = 10).
There are four main types of probability sample. Simple random sampling. In a simple random sample, every member of the population has an equal chance of being selected. Systematic sampling. Stratified sampling. Cluster sampling.
During sampling of granular materials (whether airborne, suspended in liquid, aerosol, or aggregated), correct sampling is defined in Gys sampling theory as a sampling scenario in which all particles in a population have the same probability of ending up in the sample.
Simple random sampling is a type of probability sampling in which the researcher randomly selects a subset of participants from a population. Each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
The first stage in the sampling process is to clearly define target population. Population is commonly related to the number of people living in a particular country, or in particular, a group or number of elements that researcher plans to study among.
There are 4 key steps to select a simple random sample. Step 1: Define the population. Start by deciding on the population that you want to study. Step 2: Decide on the sample size. Next, you need to decide how large your sample size will be. Step 3: Randomly select your sample. Step 4: Collect data from your sample.
