Wall of Eyes is the second studio album by the English rock band the Smile, released on 26 January 2024 through XL Recordings. It was recorded in Oxford and Abbey Road Studios, London, with the producer Sam Petts-Davies.
The Smile is a band formed by some members of Radiohead, including Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood. Its not accurate to refer to The Smile as a side project of Radiohead, as the two entities are distinct bands with different lineups and creative focuses.
Smile were an English rock band formed in London in 1968 and was the predecessor of the band Queen. The band was formed by Tim Staffell and Brian May, who later went on to form Queen. They were later joined by drummer Roger Taylor, who also went on to form Queen. They recorded six songs and disbanded in 1970.
The Smile is still unmistakably a Radiohead spinoff. Its the trio of Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, with the British jazz drummer Tom Skinner. Yorkes tormented voice has stayed upfront, and the songwriting leans into Radioheads dissonances, odd meters and fully enveloping aura of anxiety.
The eight tracks on Wall of Eyes include songs written and performed on The Smiles first tour, as well as fragments and scraps pulled from Radiohead lore and Thom Yorkes solo work.
The Smile released their second album, Wall of Eyes, produced by Sam Petts-Davies, on 26 January 2024. It was promoted with the singles Wall of Eyes and Friend of a Friend, both accompanied by music videos directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
