A person becomes a member of the Church only after they are both baptized and confirmed. A person is confirmed a member of the Church after baptism by a priesthood holder who puts his hands on the head of the person and blesses him or her to receive the Holy Ghost.
Mormon children can be confirmed members of the church at the age of eight. Converts older than eight are confirmed soon after their baptisms. The confirmation is a very simple procedure. The person being confirmed sits in a chair, with arms folded for the prayer that is about to begin.
Church membership records vary greatly in content. They may contain the individuals name; birth date and place; baptism and confirmation dates, along with the officiators name; marriage and death dates; and sometimes priesthood ordination dates.
Youre still considered to be members of the Church, unless your records are removed. Youll need to work with your local bishop to have your records removed. Normally when a member moves to another place, the membership records are transferred to their new location so they can be welcomed into their new ward.
Membership Records are available to the member or his/her immediate family from the Ward Clerk. If this is not possible, they should contact the Membership Department who answers questions related to members and, or membership status of living or deceased persons. These records are arranged by Church unit name and number. While the finding aid for this collection is digitized, the records themselves must be accessed at the Church History Library; please ask a staff member for assistance searching them. This collection is also available on microfilm at the Family History Library.
After a person is baptized, he or she is confirmed a member of the Church and receives the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands (see Doctrine and Covenants 20:41; Acts 19:16).
Any person who has received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism with water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and whos name appears in the Congregational Register shall be considered a Confirmed Member of the Church.
