Determine the Self-Correction Rate for a record. The Self- Correction Rate indicates how well a child self-monitors his or her reading. Calculate this rate by adding the total number of errors to the total number of self-corrections and dividing this sum total by the total number of self-corrections.
A running record is a detailed, objective, sequential recording written while the event is happening. It is generally short, often only 10 minutes or less. The observer writes down everything possible that the child says and does during a specified length of time or during a designated activity.
The Self- Correction Rate indicates how well a child self-monitors his or her reading. Calculate this rate by adding the total number of errors to the total number of self-corrections and dividing this sum total by the total number of self-corrections.
A self correction rate of 1: 4 means for every four errors, one is self corrected. Anything larger than this ratio would usually signal that the reader is not attending to the text and the meaning has been compromised.
Self-correction occurs when a child realizes his or her error and corrects it. When a child makes a self-correction, the previous substitution is not scored as an error. The reader uses phonics to decode the words being read. Phonics skills vary by age, grade, and instruction.
If Gracie makes an error but self-corrects her miscue, we'll draw a line over the word and write the substituted word above it. Then we'll write the letters “SC” to indicate the student's self-correction. (Self-corrections do not count as errors.) Let's look back again at Gracie's first miscue and substitution…
Miscues are children's departures from the printed text as they read a passage. These miscues generally fall into nine categories: omission, insertion, substitution, reversal, teacher-supplied word, repetition, ignoring punctuation, hesitation, and self-correction (McKenna &Dougherty Stahl, 2009, p. 47-48).
The primary goal for using a Running Record is to “obtain a detailed, objective account of behavior without inference, interpretations, or evaluations”. You will know you have gathered good evidence when you can close your eyes and you can “see” the images in your mind as they are described in your Running Record.
In order to be able to read and comprehend a book independently, a student should be able to read a book with at least 94% accuracy. With the support of an adult, or within the confines of a guided reading group, a student will make the most progress reading at instructional level, accuracy rate of 90% - 94%.
Self-correction occurs when a child realizes his or her error and corrects it. When a child makes a self-correction, the previous substitution is not scored as an error. The reader uses phonics to decode the words being read.
