greetings writers its Mr hebda from the Lackawanna College Writing Center and in this episode were going to look at how to format quotations in MLA so lets review first what is a direct quotation this is where we take the exact words of someone else and we put them in our essay to back up our arguments to help persuade our readers to agree with us so they kind of follow this logic if you think about it youre probably a student if youre listening to this video and you may not have a whole lot of expertise in what youre writing on so your reader is going to know that and theyre going to wonder well why should I agree why should I listen when you dont have a whole lot of background in that area right and you could say well hey you might not agree with me but how about this expert who does agree with me right its a way to kind of convince someone um your reader to agree with you and it helps make the essay stronger and this is why its often required to have quotes in research pap

Direct Quotations Quotation marks always come in pairs. Capitalize the first letter of a direct quote when the quoted material is a complete sentence. Do not use a capital letter when the quoted material is a fragment or only a piece of the original materials complete sentence.
Most legal citations consist of the name of the document (case, statute, law review article), an abbreviation for the legal series, and the date. The abbreviation for the legal series usually appears as a number followed by the abbreviated name of the series and ends in another number.
Quotation marks are ALWAYS used in pairs, one at the beginning of the quoted text and one at the end. The same rule applies to titles and words used in a special sense or for emphasis. Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote.
double quotation marks. another quote should appear as single marks. inside the quotation marks ONLY if they are part of the matter quoted.
Citing a quote within a quote is as simple as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. List the original authors last name. Include the date of publication of the original. Add as cited in then the name of the work.
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.
Note: A quotation appearing within another can either be parenthetically attributed to its original source or otherwise acknowledge by indicating that a citation has been omitted.
When the quoted work itself includes a quotation, that quotation should if possible be attributed to the original work in a parenthetical clause. And when that quotation shows alterations or omissions that should be indicated with the parenthetical clause (alteration in original).
