Use quotation marks only when quoting someones exact words, either spoken or written. This is called a direct quotation. I prefer my cherries chocolate covered, joked Alyssa. Jackie kept repeating, Good dog, good dog!
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
Quoting basics When you quote, you include the words and ideas of others in your text exactly as they have expressed them. You signal this inclusion by placing quotation marks ( ) around the source authors words and providing an in-text citation after the quotation.
As in the example above, a comma is used before quotation marks to introduce a direct quote. If the description of the quotes speaker is placed after the quotation, a comma is always placed within the quotation marks. Example: Im going to be a couple minutes late to class today, he said.
Youll also notice that you can use multiple quotes within the same sentence. All you have to do is designate each quote with its own set of quotation marks.
Dont sell yourself short; you are your best asset. Failure is your best asset, complacency is your worst liability, and talent is your greatest capital. Money is a great asset, talent is an extraordinary asset, and courage is an exceptional asset. A good mind is a great asset.
Direct Quotations Quotation marks always come in pairs. Capitalize the first letter of a direct quote when the quoted material is a complete sentence. Do not use a capital letter when the quoted material is a fragment or only a piece of the original materials complete sentence.
Making changes: Generally, you should quote the material exactly as the author originally wrote it, including punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. If you do change the quote, follow the appropriate guidelines listed below.
