Hello, my name is Charles Zona and I would to welcome everyone to todays McCrone Group webinar. Our presenter is Kent Rhodes of McCrone Associates. Kent is going to talk to us about using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, or XPS, for industrial problem solving. Before we started I will give you a bit of Kents background. Kent is the Senior Vice President and Technical Director of McCrone Associates. In addition to his management of technical surfaces at McCrone Associates, he also performs surface analysis using XPS, secondary ion mass spectrometry, and electron microprobe analysis. Kent has also taught the Scanning Electron Microscopy course here at Hooke College of Applied Sciences. Kent will field questions from the audience immediately following todays presentation. This webinar is being recorded and will be available on The McCrone Group website under the webinars tab and now I will hand the program over to Kent. Hello and good afternoon. Thank you for joining us today. My nam

There are a few universally accepted methods of preparing powdered samples for XPS. Of these the favoured method is to press the powder into clean, high purity indium foil. Alternatively, the powder may be dissolved in a suitable solvent and then drop cast onto the surface of a clean silicon wafer.
Quantitative XPS is the process of comparing two or more intensities in XPS spectra to determine the amount of material at the surface of a sample. These intensities may be from the same peak or different peaks in the same spectrum or the same set of peaks in different spectra.
Hydrogen and helium are missing from the table and are essentially impossible to detect by XPS. He does not readily form solid compounds and its 1s orbital has a tiny cross-section for photoemission.
The main components of an XPS system are the source of X-rays, an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber with mu-metal magnetic shielding, an electron collection lens, an electron energy analyzer, an electron detector system, a sample introduction chamber, sample mounts, a sample stage with the ability to heat or cool the
Typical samples for XPS are 5 mm to 10 mm square and up to 4 mm thick.
XPS can be used to analyze the surface chemistry of a material after an applied treatment such as fracturing, cutting or scraping. From non-stick cookware coatings to thin-film electronics and bio-active surfaces, XPS is the standard tool for surface material characterization.
Hydrogen has no core electrons and, therefore, coreelectron XPS is impossible. The H 1s electrons are valence electrons and as such participate in chemical bonding. Any signal from hydrogen would overlap with signals from excitation of valence electrons from other surface atoms.
How XPS Works. This technique uses an x-ray beam to excite the molecules on the surface of a sample, leading to a release of photoelectrons. By analyzing the energy of these photoelectrons, we can learn crucial elemental and chemical binding information about a materials surface.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
