- Welcome back! Its Tuesday, lets do this. (rock music) Alright, todays topic is dynamic range, shooting in LOG, and picture profiles. Whats the best- (piano music) for you, and whats going to give you the best picture and the best settings based on the camera that you have? So lets throw two minutes on the clock, lets go. So what is a picture profile? Now all cameras ship at these predetermined picture styles, right? So if youre shooting landscape, its saying, Hey, this is the best settings for landscape. Log, as you may know from this helpful guide, is short for logarithmic profile. Shooting in log allows your cameras sensor to capture and output more detail. Log delivers a broader dynamic range without the extreme memory and post-production demands of shooting in full RAW.
A log profile, or logarithmic profile, is a shooting profile, or gamma curve, found on some digital video cameras that gives a wide dynamic and tonal range, allowing more latitude to apply colour and style choices.
The big defining characteristic of LOG is its flat image profile. It looks this way because LOG retains a lot more color information than other footage types. So while LOG may not look pretty out of the box, it actually gives you much more flexibility when color correcting and color grading your footage.
LOG footage was invented by Kodak with their Cineon system for scanning film. This system scanned film into a LOG format that corresponded with the density of the original film, thus maximizing the amount of information from the film that could be stored in a video format.

Raw is not Log because Log is in a video format, and Raw is not video. Raw data has no video processing baked in and has to be converted into video for viewing. Log is video and has things like white balance baked into it.
What is Log. To put it simply, Logarithmic footage, generally known as Log, is flat footage that contains more details of the scene its baking into the image. This kind of footage is not intended to be used without editing so it needs further alterations to be used as the final footage.
