why does this shot look like this its shot in whats called log and actually you know what hold on one second okay much better now lets talk about exactly what log is and why you might want to shoot like this log isnt just for campfires its also a shooting profile for cameras log is short for logarithmic profile which is a camera color profile which retains more details in the highlights and the shadows shooting in a profile like this will give you more options in post to manipulate the image for instance when you shoot in a less flat profile like this and you happen to overexpose when you try to bring the brightness down in post it doesnt work very well and the image ends up breaking up but when you shoot in log the camera retains more information in the highlights and it gives you more wiggle room in post see much better so how do you expose when youre shooting in log it can be difficult to tell exactly what the exposure is when the image is this flat but you have a few options

First and foremost is the fact that shooting in log isnt always necessary. Because log is primarily designed to maximize dynamic range, it makes sense to shoot log in tricky lighting conditions where you expect there to be both extremely bright and dark parts in the image.
RAW preserves all the camera sensors information and passes it on untouched for post-production. Using a LOG profile preserves more of an images dynamic range and tonality, but bakes it into the video. Both can look very good, but they differ in how they impact the video workflow.
The big defining characteristic of LOG is its flat image profile. It looks this way because LOG retains a lot more color information than other footage types. So while LOG may not look pretty out of the box, it actually gives you much more flexibility when color correcting and color grading your footage.
A log profile, or logarithmic profile, is a shooting profile, or gamma curve, found on some digital video cameras that gives a wide dynamic and tonal range, allowing more latitude to apply colour and style choices.
Log and flat profiles are colour profiles that are used in video and photo production in order to offer flexibility during post production. The log profiles capture a wide dynamic range, having a desaturated and low contrast look. The flat profiles are used to record reduced contrast and saturation.
What is log video? Log is short for logarithmic. A log picture profile on your camera uses a different type of gamma curve than a standard profile such as Rec. 709. The benefit of shooting in log is that your video files will have a higher dynamic range.
To put it simply, Logarithmic Footage, generally known as Log, is very flat footage but that contains more details of the scene its baking into the image. This kind of footage is not intended to be used without editing so it needs further alterations to be used as the final footage.
