Ethical photography means being honest with your subjects, respecting their wishes, and being sure not to exploit them or their life circumstances. Photographers need to be aware that they have an incredible amount of power over those they photograph, which can lead some into a position of exploitation or manipulation.
Heres a list of 12 ethical dilemmas in photography, and potential approaches to navigating them: Photographing Vulnerable Populations: Its important to respect the dignity and privacy of your subjects, especially when theyre vulnerable. Manipulating Images: Extreme manipulation can lead to distortions of the truth.
You should always ask for consent before taking a photo, whether verbally or through gestures. If you do not receive consent, do not take the photo. Just because someone is in a public space, it doesnt mean its appropriate to photograph them.
In addition to legalities, you should also strive to use images ethically. This means you should be careful to represent people and situations accurately while also considering personal privacy and reputation.
Give deep consideration to the emotional, psychological, political, economic, cultural, social or physical circumstances of your subject before taking a photograph. Pause before staging a photo, and consider your reasons for doing so. Do not take a controversial photograph for the sole purpose of being controversial.
Editing should maintain the integrity of the photographic images content and context. Do not manipulate images or add or alter sound in any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent subjects. Do not pay sources or subjects or reward them materially for information or participation.
Be humble, considerate, and respectful. Try to take photos without being intrusive. Do not be aloof; build a relationship of mutual understanding with your subjects. representative of an entire community.
