To create automatic first line indents in your paper, go to the ruler and adjust the top marker called the first line indent to half an inch. This will automatically indent the first line of every paragraph while keeping subsequent lines aligned. Remember to hit enter/return to start a new paragraph. You can access the ruler by going to View and checking the ruler box.
