- Hi. In this video, Im going to answer a question that various people have asked us. And its this, what is a motif? Well essentially, a motif is a short musical idea. And usually its an idea thats repeated, developed, expanded, contracted, so its a kind of compositional device. A lot of Baroque music is built out of little motifs. So, its a particular feature there. But essentially, its an idea that can be used in any style. And its interesting how many twentieth century composers have been inspired by some of the kind of Baroque motif idea, to present something in a totally new and different style. So, lets begin with a piece that I suspect most people know. Its the opening of the Hallelujah chorus from Messiah, by Handel. You know, the thing that goes like this. Now, this is kind of presented as block chords. Quite often in Baroque music, you get something thats much more contrapuntal in design. But here, weve just got chords, havent we? But lets just consider for a mo

Motifs are short (6-8 bases long), recurring patterns that have well-defined biological functions. Motifs include DNA patterns in enhancer regions or promoter motifs, as well as motifs in RNA sequences such as splicing signals. As we have discussed, genetic activity is regulated in response to environmental variations.
The common motifs include the helix-turn-helix, the homeodomain, the leucine zipper, the helix-loop-helix, and zinc fingers of several types. The precise amino acid sequence that is folded into a motif determines the particular DNA sequence that is recognized.
MEME is a de novo motif finding tool, which was designed for finding un-gapped motifs in unaligned DNA or protein sequences.
Protein sequence motifs are signatures of protein families and can often be used as tools for the prediction of protein function. The generalization and modification of already known motifs are becoming major trends in the literature, even though new motifs are still being discovered at an approximately linear rate.
If there was an object or idea that kept popping up in the text, thats your motif. The second way is to work forward. You first look for the objects or ideas that appear over and over again. Then you link them to a theme.
Different approaches of finding motifs in DNA sequences have been introduced in literature. They can be classified into three section with respect to the type of each search technique - Enumerative Search, Deterministic Search and Stochastic Search. Enumerative search is usually used for consensus representations.
A protein sequence motif, or pattern, can be broadly defined as a set of conserved amino acid residues that are important for protein function and are located within a certain distance from each other. These motifs often can provide some clues to the functions of otherwise uncharacterised proteins.
Introduction. Sequence motifs are commonly described as relatively short conserved regions within a protein or DNA sequence [1]. These regions are of functional importance: they serve as binding sites for ligands or transcription factors, and as catalytic sites or structural elements.
A DNA sequence motif is a subsequence of DNA sequence that is a short similar recurring pattern of nucleotides, and it has many biological functions 1. A DNA motif refers to a short similar repeated pattern of nucleotides that has biological meaning.
While one can use established lists of motifs to search ones DNA sequence one can also discover them directly. In order to do this one has to derive a consensus sequence or probability matrix. In the case of bacterial proteins for which the binding sites have been determined good places to start are the E.
