Quotation marks are used to represent speech in written text. In nonfiction, theyre commonly used to transcribe what a person said, as with an interview or eyewitness account. In fiction, theyre used for writing dialogue or whenever a character says something out loud.
As a general rule, British usage has in the past usually preferred single quotes for ordinary use, but double quotes are now increasingly common; American usage has always preferred double quotes. As we shall see below, the use of double quotes in fact offers several advantages, and this is the usage I recommend here.
Quotation Marks: There are two types of quotation marks: single ( ) and double ( ). Single Quotation Marks are used to indicate dialogue within another quotation.
Quotation marks always come in pairs. Do not open a quotation and fail to close it at the end of the quoted material. Capitalize the first letter of a direct quote when the quoted material is a complete sentence.
