A Pap smear is a safe way to screen for cervical cancer. However, a Pap smear isnt foolproof. Its possible to receive false-negative results meaning that the test indicates no abnormality, even though you do have abnormal cells. A false-negative result doesnt mean that a mistake was made.
Negative for Intraepithelial Lesion or Malignancy (NILM): The Pap test revealed no abnormal cell changes. All squamous and glandular cells seen have normal-appearing cellular material. Recommendations will vary depending on your individual risk factors.
Do not use douche, bubble bath, or use vaginal medicine for three days before Pap test. You may shower, but do not tub bathe 24 hours before the Pap test. Inform your clinician about additional medications/conditions that may interfere with an accurate test.
During the Pap test, the doctor will use a plastic or metal instrument, called a speculum, to widen your vagina. This helps the doctor examine the vagina and the cervix, and collect a few cells and mucus from the cervix and the area around it. The cells are sent to a laboratory.
Introduction: While Papanicolaou (Pap) smears have resulted in a docHub decline in cervical cancer incidence and mortality, our clinical experience indicates some women still present with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) despite having received Pap smear screening.
Position the patient with her buttocks just at the edge or just over the edge of the exam table. If she is not down far enough, inserting the speculum can be more difficult for you and uncomfortable for her.
Pap Test Result Normal. A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. Unclear (ASC-US) It is common for test results to come back unclear. Abnormal. An abnormal result means that cell changes were found on your cervix. Unsatisfactory. Negative. Positive.
The Pap smear test is not 100% accurate and cervical cancer may be missed in a small number of cases. Fortunately, cervical cancer develops very slowly in most women and follow-up Pap smears should identify worrisome changes in plenty of time for treatment.
There is only two to five percent of the women who have a pap smear that has results come back abnormal. If you happen to fall into that group, you may be a bit nervous. This information will help you understand what it means to get an abnormal test result on your pap smear.
A Pap test finding that means no cancer cells or other abnormal cells have been found on the surface of or in the tissue that lines the cervix. Cell changes that suggest inflammation or infection may be included in this finding. Also called negative Pap test result, NILM, and normal Pap test result.
